Wetherspoon pub Cardiff Bay

"The Mount Stuart - JD Wetherspoon" in Cardiff, Wales, is a spacious and modern pub that belongs to the well-known British Wetherspoon chain and is located in the vibrant Cardiff Bay area. It opened in 2013 and utilizes a historic building that was originally constructed in the 1880s as the office of the Mount Stuart Dry Docks Company Ltd. – a testament to the former significance of the docks, which were developed by the Marquesses of Bute. The name of the pub derives from the eponymous, now-demolished pub that once stood before the docks and also refers to the ancestral home of the Marquesses on the Isle of Bute. Today, the establishment blends seamlessly into the revitalized surroundings of Mermaid Quay and attracts a diverse mix of tourists, locals, and families who appreciate the views of the bay and the relaxed atmosphere.

Pub with outdoor terrace Cardiff

The interior spans two floors and features a minimalist, industrial design with open spaces that is typical of newer Wetherspoon branches. Both floors have their own bars and generous outdoor terraces, with the upper terrace offering impressive views over the bay – ideal for watching the activity in the harbor or the nearby Landsea Gardens. A striking feature is the glass spiral staircase, built around a concrete pillar, connecting the floors, as well as a circular gas burner surrounded by stones that adds a modern touch to the space. The décor is bright and airy, with large windows allowing natural light to flood in, and it accommodates many guests, making it pleasant even during busy times – such as during the Cardiff Bay Food Festival or in good weather.

Traditional breakfast in pub

Culinary-wise, "The Mount Stuart" follows the tried-and-true Wetherspoon philosophy: solid pub fare with a focus on British classics, served quickly. Particularly popular is the “Traditional Breakfast,” which impresses with fried eggs, crispy bacon, sausages, and fresh toast – a hearty start to the day that is especially appreciated by breakfast guests. The “Fish and Chips” is also a favorite, featuring juicy cod in crispy batter served with thick chips and a tangy tartar sauce – a dish that perfectly captures British culinary culture. For those seeking a bit of spice, the “Flaming Dragon Curry” offers an exciting alternative, with a fiery sauce inspired by Asian flavors, served with rice or naan. The dishes are straightforward yet filling, and the kitchen emphasizes freshness in preparation.

Lively pub in Cardiff

The drinks menu is another strong point of the pub, featuring a wide selection of real ales that change regularly, as well as well-known beers like “Greene King IPA,” which impresses with its malty notes and refreshing finish. International lagers like Stella Artois are also available, highlighting the partnership with Inbev. For those preferring something lighter, there is Lavazza coffee served fresh ground, or seasonal cocktails that complement the offerings. The outdoor terraces invite patrons to enjoy the view with a pint, while the bars inside provide a reliable option even in inclement weather.

Historic building Cardiff Bay

The atmosphere at "The Mount Stuart" is typical of Wetherspoon: lively, sometimes hectic, but always friendly. The staff is efficient and eager to help, although the quality of service may vary during peak times – especially on weekends or during large events in the bay. The pub is wheelchair accessible, with an elevator between the floors, and ordering via the app makes the process even more convenient. It is a place that does not aim for culinary heights but relies on consistency, making it perfect for a quick snack, a breakfast before a walk, or a relaxed drink after sightseeing. On sunny days, the terraces are often full, and the proximity to attractions like the Wales Millennium Centre or the Senedd enhances its appeal.

Absolute shambles. Went to watch the rugby. Watches the Ireland v France game first. Waited for our country to play Scotland. And waited, and waited. We all asked several times, and to our utter disappointment there was no bbc1 to watch the game. An extremely rude young lady who works there then questioned us because we complained. We left and watched the game in the Dock next door. Rude staff and remember, no BBC1 in 2025!

We visited the Mount Stuart for lunch with our grandchildren. We all had different meals and all were nicely presented and tasty. They were all excellent value for money too. We had a super friendly person called Alex looking after us, both at the bar and table. He made our visit even better with his great customer care. He's a credit to the venue.

Sometimes pop in here when I'm in the bay area....not so much of a traditional pub vibe....but a contemporary high ceiling large open space bar and restaurant perhaps....on at least two floors with a balcony terrace area also....lots of air and light from the largely glass structure....not really a bargain basement spoons perhaps.... service adequate to good.... sometimes even friendly with a hello!....food and drink seem to be good....bit of a draw back is it's often absolutely jam packed....from my experience anyways....some guy came with his partner and sat at a table I was using to dine once last summer....it was fully occupied....had to ask the manager to ask them politely to move!....never mind.... certainly a nice spot on a quieter day perhaps.... I would certainly give a general recommendation....

The staff were pleasant. But I found them to be rushed off their feet as it was a really busy place, especially about midday on a week day.

Great location and have been here previously, albeit a few years ago. This time I went for lunch with my child, they had the tomato pasta with cheese, I had the buttermilk chicken burger and ordered an extra buttermilk chicken. Low score is due to the food, the tomato pasta sauce didn't taste nice, had a very thick dry consistency. The chicken was quite mushy and thin, I did finish all my food but even the little one didn't like the chicken when I gave them a piece. Chips were nice though. Whilst I didn't expect a la carte, it was just disappointing that I left there feeling I wasted £25 and should have got us lunch elsewhere.

Chicken jalfrezi came with 2 poppadoms dripping with grease. I couldn't eat them. All the dry roasted peanuts behind the bar were on the best before date and the nuts tasted metallic. Exchanged these for spicy peanuts which had blood (not mine) on the packet. Also only 1 real ale (Abbot) above 4.3% abv. A very poor experience.
